Marenthe Otten

Marenthe studied at the Academy of Arts, Graphic Design and Illustration in Belgium, graduating cum laude in 1994. She worked for more than 20 years as illustrator and graphic designer. Many of her clients are well-known, like Flow Magazine, Elle Magazine, Post NL, C&A, Kinderboekenmuseum, the Dutch Opera, Philips, Hallmark and Succes agenda.

Marenthe’s work has been recognised in Europe, Asia and the United States. She has won a number of prestigious international awards, including a European Design Award (silver) and Merits from the Art Directors Club, New York. Marenthe was shortlisted for an award from the Type Directors Club Tokyo and has been nominated several times for the Dutch Design Awards.

Marenthe’s world is a wonderful world. She retains the playful, eclectic wonder she discovered as a child. She travels extensively and often revisits her collection of paraphernalia (or her mum’s attic) to find more creative inspiration.

Marenthe lives and works in The Hague. She loves yoga, meditation, good veggie food, the moon, hedgehogs, Roodje (her cat), English books and writing. Concerning her technique, she explains: “I work mainly with acryl gouache by Holbein (from Japan, I’m addicted to it – this is so good). I also use acrylic paint by Winsor & Newton. Sometimes black and white ink pen and until recently I painted everything with gouache. I’m also addicted to paper, like the drawing pads by Daler & Rowney.”
